In Naija Game Arena Whot, two players start with five cards each. On your turn, play one card that matches the top card by shape or number, use a Whot card as a wildcard, or draw one card and end your turn. The first player to empty their hand wins; if the draw pile runs out, the player with the lower hand score wins.
Whot at a glance
- The game is played head-to-head: one player against one player.
- Each player receives five cards and the remaining cards form the draw pile.
- A legal play matches either the shape or the number on the top discard.
- A Whot card numbered 20 can be played on any card and lets you choose the next shape.
- Drawing a card ends your turn; you do not play the card you just drew immediately.
How a turn works
- Check the top card on the discard pile and any active instruction from the previous play.
- Play one legal card from your hand. It must match by shape or number unless it is a Whot wildcard.
- If you play a Whot card, choose Circle, Triangle, Cross, Square or Star as the requested shape.
- If you have no card you want or are allowed to play, draw exactly one card. Your turn then ends.
- Continue until one player has no cards left or the draw pile is exhausted.
What counts as a legal move?
Suppose the top card is Triangle 7. You may play any Triangle card, any number 7 card, or a Whot card. A Square 3 is not legal because neither its shape nor its number matches.
Instruction cards still need to be legal by shape or number before their effect applies. A Whot card is the exception: it is always playable when you are free to make a normal play.
If you are resolving a Pick Two penalty, your only action is to draw the required two cards. Pick Two cards do not stack on Naija Game Arena.
How the winner is decided
The normal win condition is simple: play your final card. Special cards may be used as your last card, but emptying your hand ends the match immediately. The instruction may still be shown as an animation, but it has no gameplay consequence after the win.
If the draw pile is exhausted before either hand is empty, the cards left in each hand are scored. Number cards use their printed value, instruction cards use their printed value, Whot cards count as 20 points, and Star cards count double. The lower total wins; equal totals produce a draw.
Four useful beginner habits
- Keep more than one shape available where possible so one change does not block your hand.
- Notice the numbers your opponent cannot answer; number matching can help you switch shapes deliberately.
- Do not spend every instruction card early. A Hold On or Suspension near the end can protect your final move.
- Reduce high-scoring cards before the draw pile becomes low, especially Whot and Star cards.
Frequently asked questions
How many cards does each player get in Whot?
Each player starts with five cards on Naija Game Arena.
Can I play a card immediately after drawing it?
No. Drawing one card ends your turn, even if the new card could have been played.
Can I finish with a special card?
Yes. Emptying your hand ends the match immediately, so the special-card instruction has no gameplay consequence after the win.
What happens when the Whot draw pile runs out?
The remaining hands are scored and the lower score wins. If both totals are equal, the match is a draw.
